Grey is the new Green

Recyclable products are becoming more and more popular and even fashionable, not only in Australia but all over the world. Many aspiring and successful designers are looking towards greener ways of creating their products. The material I have chosen is called EchoPanel.

This material has been a huge favourite with my brother's Peg Stool. It has won the 'Best Sustainable Design Award' as a part of the Australian International Furniture Fair in Sydney earlier this year, and has also been selected to be showcased at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York this May.

What is EchoPanel?

It is a woven type felt made of 60% post-consumer waste streams and is 100% recyclable. The material is incredibly strong, and doesn't shrink or expand when wet. I wanted to test out the material in my next pair of shoes.

EchoPanel is available in a range of colours, however I chose to keep it simple with grey - I love grey.

I thought it would be a nice contrast to hand stitch the quarters and back seam - highlighting what is usually hidden. I chose to saddle stitch these sections in white to match the eyelets. It would also look really nice in a colour, which might be my next project!
